A small habit with big effect.
For most of my life, I never really considered drinking lemon water in the morning as an essential habit. I questioned its benefits and didn’t see the point in doing it. After all, my go-to morning routine consisted of a nutritious breakfast and my beloved coffee. However, everything changed when I recently took part in a challenge where we had to introduce a new daily habit each week.
Initially, I struggled to come up with something meaningful. I already prioritized sleep, movement and a balanced diet, so did not know what else I could improve. Then, a colleague shared her idea about drinking warm lemon water in the morning and this inspired me to try doing it as a first thing, after I wake up. Because I thought, why not test it? It seemed simple enough to implement, although I needed to put a reminder in my phone about it for the first few weeks. So, after I gave it a try, I quickly started to see some changes in my body. I was quite astonished by that as I didn’t expect anything alike, apart from some hydration and an additional habit to develop. And now, almost two months later, I can’t imagine starting my day without it. Plus I don’t need a reminder in my phone anymore – now it is literally the first thing that I do when I come into the kitchen!
The benefits of lemon water
As basic and simple as it sounds, I’ve already noticed several positive effects from this tiny morning ritual:
- Hydration boost – a great way to rehydrate the body after sleep, it also adds up to the amount of the daily water intake.
- Aids digestion – helps stimulate the digestive system.
- Vitamin C intake – supports the immune system in better functioning.
- Glowing skin – antioxidants contribute to skin health and its appearance.
In addition it is also said that it’s good for:
- Kidney stone prevention – citrates may reduce the risk of kidney stones.
- Building a better routine – this small habit creates momentum for a mindful morning.
Indeed, beyond the physical benefits, I realized that this practice positively impacts my mindset. Each morning, drinking lemon water is like a small win – a reminder that sticking to simple, healthy habits can create discipline and confidence in all areas of life.
How to prepare the lemon water
Making lemon water is really super easy. What you’ll need for it is slightly warm or room temperature water, as this helps extract the vitamin C, plus some juice squeezed out of a half of lemon.
Here’s how:
- Use fresh lemons- squeeze half a lemon into a glass of warm or room-temperature water.
- Avoid adding sugar or sweeteners.
- If the taste is too strong, dilute it with more water or add natural flavors like mint, ginger, or turmeric.
- Drink it first thing in the morning, ideally on an empty stomach, for the best results.
I am amazed at how such simple habit has transformed my mornings. I didn’t expect that this tiny step would create a huge outcome: not only physically, but also mentally and emotionally. I still feel a sense of achievement when thinking about this step that I’ve done for the sake of just trying out something new. Knowing, that I can stick to any simple habit, makes me even more confident that I can build consistency in other areas of my life at any time. It strengthens me mentally, boosts my confidence and reminds me that some small daily actions can have a really big impact.
