Sunshine, stillness and stretch under the sky: the power of Outdoor Yoga

What makes it special?

Outdoor yoga is a refreshing and grounding experience that connects you with nature from the very first breath. Imagine rolling out your mat on soft grass, feeling the earth beneath your feet and starting to move gently as the sun warms your skin. The sound of birds replaces background music, the breeze deepens your breath and the open sky becomes your studio ceiling. Practicing outdoors invites a sense of freedom, presence and calm that’s hard to find indoors. Every posture feels more alive, every inhale more expansive. It’s a beautiful way to reset, recharge and feel fully connected: to your body, your breath and the world around you.

No matter the time – whether it is morning or evening, during the week or the weekend – it is great to just step outside into the park, unroll the mat and start the practice with intention. Surronded by the green space, the noise from the city fades away as the nature whispers its quiet invitation for some mindful movement. Now imagine moving through yoga poses in this setting. Every inhalation is filled with fresh, oxygen-rich air. Every exhalation carries tension away into the open sky. The ground beneath you reminds you of your roots. The open sky invites your whole body to expand. You feel part of something larger, connected not only to your breath, which feels now deeper and more present, but to the earth and natural world itself.

Outdoor yoga isn’t just yoga in a different setting. It’s a sensory, soulful experience that opens up your practice, your mind and your heart in ways a studio simply can’t replicate. It’s yoga in its most natural form, where breath meets breeze, stillness meets birdsong and you find yourself fully present, grounded and fully alive.

A practice that awakens all senses

Unlike a studio with walls, mirrors and artificial lighting, outdoor yoga invites in real life:

  • The warmth of the sun on your face during the practice
  • A soft breeze cooling you down throught the class
  • The sound of rustling leaves guiding your breath in meditation
  • The feeling of bare feet pressing into the earth, anchoring and steadying you

Distractions? There may be some for sure. But what if we reframed them? The occasional bark of a dog or distant laughter of children or their parents becomes part of the practice. Those are teaching us presence, adaptability and how to stay calm in an imperfect world. That is the true yoga. And when you lie back in Savasana and look up into an endless sky, something opens up inside of you. A sense of awe. A moment of stillness. A deep exhale you didn’t know you were holding.

Physical, mental and emotional benefits of Outdoor Yoga

Outdoor yoga offers all the benefits of a traditional practice: strength, flexibility and better focus, however with additional gifts that only nature can offer:

  • Enhanced grounding: Practicing on the earth helps regulate the nervous system and lower stress (this is called earthing, and it’s backed by science).
  • Mood elevation: Exposure to sunlight and greenery boosts serotonin and improves overall mood.
  • Improved balance and proprioception: Practicing on uneven terrain challenges small stabilizing muscles, enhancing functional strength and mobility.
  • Deeper breathwork: Natural air promotes full, nourishing breaths and improves energy and oxygenation.
  • Heightened awareness: With no mirrors or studio cues, your inner listening sharpens – you tune in to your body, your breath and your inner rhythm.

But most of all, you begin to feel a deeper sense of peace and connection that stays with you long after you’ve rolled up your mat.

What to expect in an Outdoor Yoga session

These classes are thoughtfully curated to meet you exactly where you are: whether you’re a seasoned yogi or new to the mat. Each practice invites presence, curiosity and exploration. We might begin with grounding breathwork sitting quietly and tuning in to the rhythm of the natural world. Then we move through mindful sequences, Hatha-based flows for strength and awareness and sometimes some slow Yin-inspired stretches to release tension and connect deeper with the body. Sometimes, we’ll weave in a moment of stillness with eyes open – simply watching the sky shift above. No class is ever exactly the same. The weather, the group energy, the season – all shape the practice. And that’s the beauty of it: every session is alive.

What to bring with you

  • A yoga mat (& a towel if needed)
  • Comfortable clothes eg. warm sweater (= layer up in case the weather is uncertain!)
  • Bottle of water
  • Sunscreen or a hat if needed
  • An open mind and a curious heart
  • A friend or family member or just your full self – either is enough.

Why you should try it

if you’ve never done Outdoor Yoga then it’s a good reason to give it a try. Just because you’re human and humans need nature. Also because there’s something profoundly healing about looking up from your phone and looking out at the sky instead. Furthermore, because we all need to slow down sometimes, to breathe more fully and to remember that we are not separate from the world: we are a part of it. Because outdoor yoga is a return to your breath, your body, your senses and your joy on a deeper level.
